I brought this for myself as i wanted to start to do some photography more than what a pocket camera could do, i spent hours looking at reviews/Cameras in shops and trolling through reviews online, and after going to a shop to 'have a hold' i decided that this was the most comfortable in my hand.
I had decided on the Canon at first but when holding it just felt all wrong (fingers were in wrong place and not hitting the shoot button when trying to take a shot!) Not good when you are trying to capture the moment!!
So i would def recommend poppin into local dealer to try but i got all my kit, lens, bag etc off Amazon as it did work out cheaper than the shops.

5 out of 5 stars first class dslr beginners camera   August 20, 2010
Mr. S. Dickinson (uk)
i bought this camera only 3 days ago and i have to say its so easy to use , the day i bought it i was out that same night shooting night shots, i have the hs10 and have had some good results with night shots maybe half i shot where usable but with the d3000 only one shot was not usable really pleased with it the clarity is crisp sharp and out standing quality , i am really only a novice and i found it to be so easy to get the hang of it an excellent beginners camera the guide mode is fantastic but to be honest i didn't need to use it , so its a really excellent buy superb quality shot from a very affordable dslr camera first class it may not be to an out and out expert but to a novice like my self the quality picture you get from it speaks for them selves ............excelent

I have been waiting for several months for the price to drop from the original £500 price tag on release before i finally snapped one up. My previous Nikon was a D40 which i really regret selling. The D3000 is an update of the D40 with some improvements but with a couple of minus points.
The picture quality is very good out of the camera on Auto setting but a little soft and slightly lacking colour saturation for my liking.
I have improved considerably on the picture quality by setting the camera on (P Auto mode) and increasing the colour saturation to +2 as well as the picture sharpness to +5. The 11 point autofocus as well as the active D lighting really improves on contrasty situaltion. The odd complaints of a 3 second delay for the picture to appear onscreen when using active D lighting isn't really an issue for the amateur slr photographer that this camera is aimed at.
There have been odd remarks regarding more noise at iso 1600 than the D40 but i have set the maximum iso to 800 and it's fine for my general use.
The £130 odd extra money for a D5000 isn't really justified unless you are taking a considerable ammount of low light photo's without a flash and need minimum noise in photo's.The live view mode is also not really needed or is the D5000's video capability which would be better on a reasonably cheap sd camcorder.
